Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) offers less invasive, less intense fertility treatment option and our experienced team at JIVA Fertility, will provide you the personalized care and support throughout your journey to help optimise your chances of success.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly inside a woman’s uterus (womb) around ovulation to facilitate fertilisation.
IUI is an option available for couples facing certain fertility challenges or for single women and same-sex female couples using donor sperm.
Use of Donor Sperm:
- Single women who wish to conceive as a single parent.
- Same-sex female couples looking to achieve pregnancy.
- Heterosexual couples – medical or genetic conditions causing azoospermia (a condition when there is no sperm in the semen).
Use of Male Partner’s Sperm in a Heterosexual Relationship
- Unexplained Infertility – When no clear cause of infertility is identified despite undertaking all the available investigations.
- Mild Endometriosis – Where the condition is present but does not significantly impact ovarian function or fallopian tube health.
- Mild Male Factor Infertility – If the sperm count or motility is slightly lower than normal but still viable for conception.
- Cervical Factor Infertility – When the cervix produces thick mucus or has scarring that prevents sperm from passing through naturally.
- Where the couple have difficulties with penetrative sexual intercourse due to medical, physical, or psychological reasons
IUI is not suitable for individuals with blocked/damaged fallopian tubes, severe sperm abnormality, or cases where IVF/ICSI may offer a higher chance of success.
Success rates for IUI vary based on factors such as your age, underlying fertility issues, and whether fertility medications are used. Generally, IUI success rates are about a third of those for IVF. We will guide you to appropriate, reliable resources for the success rates of our clinics.
- Age: Younger women typically have better chances of conceiving with IUI treatment.
- Fertility Medications: Using ovulation-inducing drugs increases the success rates
- Underlying Health Conditions may reduce IUI effectiveness.
Ovarian Stimulation (if applicable):
Depending on individual circumstances, fertility medications may be prescribed to stimulate the ovaries and promote the development of follicles (egg containing sacs). This is not needed in a Natuarl Cycle IUI.
Monitoring:
Regular ultrasound scans (+/- blood tests) will be undertaken to track follicle development and determine timing of ovulation. In the event of a natural cycle IUI, you will be advised to use home ovulation kits to determine the LH hormone surge to plan your IUI cycle.
Sperm Preparation:
A semen sample from your partner or a donor is processed in the laboratory to concentrate motile sperm and remove other cells.
Insemination:
Using a thin catheter, the prepared sperm is gently inserted into the uterus (womb) through the cervix. The procedure is similar to a cervical smear test and involves minimal discomfort.
Post-Procedure:
You can usually resume normal activities immediately. You may need medications after the procedure, especially if confirmed by low serum progesterone concentrations on blood tests.
Pregnancy test and scans:
A pregnancy test is scheduled approximately two weeks after insemination and if it is positive, you will have an early pregnancy scan two-three weeks later.
We offer Natural Cycle and Stimulated Cycle IUI treatments
We use Gonadotropins for Stimulated IUI
Gonadotropins are the hormones produced by pituitary gland.
These are daily injections (subcutaneous: given just under your skin around belly-button or upper thigh) which will directly stimulate follicles development in your ovaries. They contain either follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) or FSH and leutinising hormone (LH).
You need very close monitoring by regular ultrasound scans +/- blood tests to assess development of follicles and a hCG injection to help release of egg/s.
The side effects may include abdominal distention/discomfort, bloating sensation, mood swings, fatigue or restlessness.
There is a risk of multiple pregnancy if more than one follicle develops. If more than two follicles develop, we advise cycle cancellation and abstinence from intercourse to prevent a multiple pregnancy. The risk of twin pregnancies can be as high as one in four pregnancies. Triplets may also occur in around one in a hundred treatment cycles.
There is a small risk of developing OHSS - The symptoms include severe pain in the pelvis, abdomen and chest, nausea, vomiting, bloating, weight gain, thrombosis and difficulty breathing and you may need to be admitted to the hospital.
The cost of IUI varies depending on the clinic and whether fertility medications are used. It’s generally less expensive than IVF, making it an appealing first-line treatment for many patients. For detailed pricing, please refer to our Cost of Treatments page.
For personalised advice and to determine if IUI is the right option for you, please schedule a consultation with our fertility specialists at JIVA Fertility.
We recommend trying few cycles of IUI treatment and we will be happy to support three Natural Cycles and three Stimulated Cycles of IUI.
If pregnancy has not happened after six cucles of IUI, we will do more tests and you may be advised to consider IVF treatment.
Generally, IUI is a safe procedure. However, the following will have to be considered.
- Multiple Pregnancies: The use of fertility medications (if used) may increase the risk of twins or higher-order multiples and hence will have to be carefully monitored, and in some circumstances, the treatment may have to be cancelled.
- Infection: Though rare, there is a slight risk of infection following IUI procedure, and hence we recommend infection screening before the procedure to reduce the risk.
- There is a small risk of developing Ovarian Hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) with the use of medications for stimulated IUI
- Emotional and Financial Factors: Multiple cycles may be needed, which can be emotionally and financially demanding.
